In the US the national curricula for EMTs has been developed by the US
Department of transportation. You can find the documents at:
http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/people/injury/ems/nsc.htm

There are basically 3 levels
EMT-Basic
EMT-Intermediate (not always developed in every jurisdiction)
EMT-Paramedic

Having just finished teaching my first EMT Basic class, I can say it is
roughly 120 long hours. Generally 10 to 20 hours of that is 'clinical'
time spent performing actual patient assessments under the direct
supervision of a field training coach, as well as orientations with
providers of higher levels of care, such as Medics and ED staff.

The EMT B curriculum can be found in this PDF file:
http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/people/injury/ems/pub/emtbnsc.pdf

You may also find these other web sites illustrative of the EMT educational
process here in the states:
The Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute
http://www.mfri.org/

The Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems
http://miemss.umaryland.edu/

I hope this helps,
Tom
